Tip of the Week – Guiding Principles – Apr 24/23

Guiding Principles:  Now that we have looked at morals and ethics, lets delve into guiding principles.

A few companies that I have worked for have used this expression to guide their framework for decision making.  They had a list of the guiding principles that were most valued to the owners/management.

Some companies make these a priority and follow them, some it was just wallpaper that colored up the hallways, however, management didn't necessarily follow them but they expected everyone else to.

Remember, it is important to practice what you preach - you will gain way more respect. Stuff runs downhill - so whatever happens at the top, trickles down and is ultimately what others do. A company can only go as far as the management involved - people alone can't go further.

These guiding principles also assisted them during the hiring process.

A majority of information on guiding principles is more geared towards business and making business decisions…but what if we utilized the strategies in our personal life when making decisions?

However, I did find some for families!

You can find a whole bunch of information on individual companies guiding principles online as well.  Many have made them public as they would with their mission or vision statement, etc., which I think is a good thing.

Questions to Ponder:

Does your business have guiding principles?

What would you say are your guiding principles?

What are your top 3?

Are you teaching your kids to have guiding principles?
