Tip of the Week – Job Security – Oct 3/22

Job Security:  This is an interesting topic.

I’ve seen a lot of different avenues, thoughts and ideas on this.

First Category:  Some people believe that by hoarding their workload and being the only person able to do the job creates an atmosphere of job security.

Second Category:  Others are quite the opposite – they mentor, knowledge share, provide updates, and are quite open to their tasks and responsibilities.

Third Category:  A hybrid of both above categories where there is less sharing, more hoarding, a bit secretive and will share or mentor items of their choice.

All have had their advantages and disadvantages over the years.  All types of people have lost their jobs during downsizing corporations.

So what is the answer to job security?

I think it boils down to doing the best job possible in the position you are in, while being you.

If you feel insecure in your role, that will definitely create an environment of being in the first category.

If you feel more secure in your role, you will identify more with the second category.

If you have a mixture of security and insecurity, you will tend to relate more to the third category.

Questions to Ponder:

Which category do you relate with the most?

Is it beneficial for you to be in that category?

Can you make changes to help you feel more secure in your role?
